Item # CIC12150 - CICERO Master System U.S. History: 600 B.C. - Present

A comprehensive account of the influences, founding and current work in progress known as the United States of America. The vision, ideals, struggles, successes and challenges from the past up to the present day.

Includes Units 1 - 15

Unit 1:The Roots of America: 600 B.C. – 1688 A.D.

Many of the ideas and values we hold so dear today were not our inventions. The Roots of America stretch back more than 2,500 years to the ancient Greeks and the later Roman Republic and continue through the European Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. Discover how these ideas developed over time and what events led to their evolution.

Unit 2:The First Globalization: 500 A.D. – 1609 A.D.

In the late 15th century the world began to rapidly change. European explorers were beginning to venture farther from their homelands and developing tools and techniques that would help them find their way. Follow these courageous explorers as they change or are changed by, for better or worse, the lands and people they encounter along the way.

Unit 3:North American Colonies: 1586 A.D. – 1763 A.D.

With competition between European nations at its height, and Spain already establishing settlements throughout the New World, countries like France, Holland, England and Sweden looked for their share of land and riches. Examine the motives, setbacks, and triumphs of the early settlers who risked everything when they boarded ships bound for the New World.

Unit 4: The Birth of Liberty: 1764 A.D. – 1783 A.D.

By 1775 a serious rift had developed between the Thirteen Colonies and the British government. As it became increasingly apparent that the relationship was irreparable, colonial delegates in Philadelphia declared independence, created a Continental Army and drafted the nation’s first constitution. The struggle that followed would last eight years and claim the lives of 26,000 Americans and 10,000 British. Analyze the causes, assess the strategies, and examine the legacy of America’s war for independence.

Unit 5: American Government: 1781 A.D. – 1801 A.D.

In May of 1787, 55 delegates from every state except for Rhode Island met at the State House in Philadelphia with the intention of revising the Articles of Confederation. The delegates soon came to realize that they would have to scrap the Articles and create a new constitution. Evaluate the debates and compromises that would result in the world's oldest ""living"" constitution.

Unit 6: The Early Republic: 1801 A.D. – 1828 A.D.

By 1800 American independence had proven durable, but the United States was still taking shape. The ongoing struggle between Britain and France for world power shaped United States history during this time. Analyze the problems faced and evaluate the decisions made during this crucial period in the evolution of our nation.

Unit 7: Antebellum America: 1829 A.D. – 1850 A.D.

No war, before or since, cost as many American lives or caused as much destruction of American property as the Civil War. Examine the social, political, and economic factors that led to this crucial event in our nation’s history.

Unit 8: Civil War: 1851 A.D. – 1874 A.D. A.D.

While the Civil War settled the questions of slavery and secession, questions about racial and ethnic differences and about wealth, power, poverty and privilege were debated, fought over and still remain at issue. From the fateful election of 1860 to Reconstruction, explore every facet of the War Between the States.

Unit 9: Industrialization: 1875 A.D. – 1888 A.D.

In the final decades of the nineteenth century, the story of America was one of growth and migration. While industry attracted throngs of jobseekers to eastern cities, the promise of cheap land lured homesteaders farther west. Examine the people and events that made industrial growth and westward expansion possible and weigh the pros and cons of each.

Unit 10: U.S.A. and the World: 1889 A.D. – 1901 A.D.

America has always been a land of immigrants, but prior to the mid-1800s, most immigrants were Protestant Christians from northern and western Europe. As industry continued to grow, a new, more diverse influx of immigrants landed on American shores. At the same time, the nation was taking a more prominent role on the world stage. Trace America's change from a fairly homogenous, isolationist nation, to a more cosmopolitan, interventionist nation.

Unit 11: Progressive Era: 1902 A.D. – 1913 A.D.

The history of the United States can be seen as a long process of a people trying to get their society closer to an ideal. In the twentieth century a variety of special interest groups emerged, each with their own reform agenda. Compare, contrast, and evaluate the divergent and often controversial issues raised during this complex era.

Unit 12: World War I Era: 1914 A.D. – 1935 A.D.

In 1914 the international rivalries that had divided Europe for centuries reached the breaking point. The United States managed to remain neutral, at least in theory if not in fact, until 1917. U.S. entry into the “Great War” would tip the balance in favor of the Allies. In the United States, a post-war economic boon generated record prosperity. Unfortunately, the prosperity of the 1920s held the seeds of the Great Depression that descended in 1929. A time of contrasts, examine both the victories and the pitfalls that characterize these two decades in American history.

Unit 13: World War II Era: 1936 A.D. – 1946 A.D.

When Britain and France declared war against Germany, the United States, stood poised to supply them with weapons and other material, just as it had at the start of World War I. This would create jobs and generate profits, bringing an end to the Great Depression. And again, this involvement would lead us into war. Evaluate key decisions made before, during and after World War II.

Unit 14: Cold War: 1947 A.D. – 1992 A.D.

From the rubble of World War II emerged two Super Powers: The United States and the Soviet Union. For the next fifty years, these two nations would vie for world dominance. At the same time, the United States would struggle with internal conflicts as citizens challenged the nation to live up to the ideals of equality and liberty espoused in our founding documents. Assess national events in the context of the international struggle for world dominance.

Unit 15: The New Globalization: 1993 A.D. – Present

Many Americans hoped that the end of the Cold War would bring peace and fewer problems. They were soon disappointed. A time of social, political and economic change, ""Globalization"" created a much smaller, more interdependent world. At the same time, old tensions between ethnic and religious factions caused bloody conflicts. Weigh the pros and cons of international interdependence, examine the emergence of religious fundamentalism, and assess the United States’ role in our changing world.
